Rose Davies has etched her name into Commonwealth Games history, becoming the first woman from any nation to win both the 5000m and 10,000m titles at the same Games.
The Newcastle-based distance runner completed the historic double in dramatic fashion, storming home to claim gold in the 5000m final after a thrilling battle with fellow Australian Jessica Hull.
With 200m to go, Davies made her move, shifting gears as Hull and Scotland’s Megan Keith chased behind. Despite Hull’s renowned finishing speed, Davies held her form down the final straight to cross the line first in 14:44.53, with Hull taking silver in 14:45.01 and Keith rounding out the podium in 14:49.10.
The victory came just three days after Davies claimed gold in the 10,000m, completing a feat never previously achieved by a female athlete at the Commonwealth Games.
The result was also a special moment for Australian distance running, with Davies and Hull – both Newcastle-based athletes who train at the same track – delivering a memorable one-two finish on the international stage.
Hull praised Davies’ composure in the final stages, saying she hoped Davies would take time to reflect on her remarkable achievement.
With two gold medals secured, Davies now returns home as a Commonwealth Games legend, having delivered one of the greatest performances in Australian distance running history.
