I first got into running during the off-season from footy. I just wanted something to keep me fit, but I had no idea it would become such a big part of my life. My real love for running began when I joined a trail event with Adelaide Trail Runners. From the moment I crossed the finish line at my first race in Black Hill, I was hooked. There’s something about being out in nature, the fresh air, the uneven terrain, the challenge of it all, that makes trail running so addictive.
One of the best parts of my journey has been sharing it with my dog, Delilah. She’s eight now, so we don’t run together as much because she tends to pull up a little sore, but back in the day she was the ultimate running buddy. Every run with her was fun, exciting, and a little bit chaotic – which made it the best. These days she’s more about walks (with the occasional mini run), but she still loves being part of it.

Over the years, I’ve had some favourite spots to run. In Adelaide, the Onkaparinga River Reserve was a perfect escape – kangaroos, the river, pure nature… and sometimes snakes! Happy Valley Reservoir was another go-to. Now that I’m in Melbourne, I love running around Albert Park and along the Yarra. Yarra Bend Park has quickly become a favourite too – it’s stunning and shows how lucky we are to have so many beautiful spots close to the city.
Running has also come with its funny moments. Once, I bought a new pair of shoes online after my old ones had been trashed. I was so excited to take them for a spin that I didn’t notice the security tag was still attached. There I was, running laps with brand new shoes that basically screamed “stolen!” I’m sure a few people wondered what I was up to. I had to sheepishly go back to the shop the next day to get the tag removed, but at least I got a laugh out of it.
For me, running is so much more than fitness. It’s a way to explore, to reflect, and to appreciate the simple moments – the trails, the sunrise, the rhythm of your feet hitting the ground. It’s taught me patience, resilience, and the joy of just showing up, whether I’m racing, training, or going for a casual run.
Running is also about pushing yourself – testing your limits, discovering what you’re capable of, and celebrating the small wins along the way. It can be deeply personal, a time just for you, or a shared experience with a community that motivates and inspires. It builds confidence, resilience, and a sense of achievement that carries over into the rest of life.
Running has given me so much – from new friendships and experiences to unforgettable memories. And while it’s not always easy, it’s always worth it… especially when you’ve got a four-legged friend who’s just as excited about the journey as you are.
