On 9 February 2025, eighteen-year-old Delaney Troon embarked on an impressive challenge she named “21twentyones.” Every day for 21 days, Delaney would rise and run a Half Marathon (21.1K) around the 6K loop at Lake Wendouree, in Ballarat.

Why embark on such a challenge? Delaney was running in support of a cause close to her heart: men’s mental health. Delaney sadly lost her dad to suicide when she was only 6.

“Ballarat’s suicide rate is above the national average,” Delaney said. “Men are often silent in their battles and we can all be leaders in changing that outdated narrative.”

Delaney’s challenge has not only raised important awareness for the cause – the community came together, and inspired by Delaney, raised an impressive $210,000 for Ballarat Men’s Mental Health.

“The most rewarding part was sharing stories and connecting with people. There are a lot of amazing people in this world, and I feel very lucky to have met some of them.” Delaney reflected.

In order to execute the 21twentyones, Delaney began training 9 months prior. “The harder you work for something, the more nervous it makes you,” she said, explaining that a few months before February 9, she increased her mileage to 100km per week, all whilst studying for Year 12.

Delaney was driven by her passion. “I noticed not as many females took on running challenges as did men. I wanted to be a role model for young girls to show them capable we are.”

Lake Wendouree was never empty – Delaney had an incredible support crew, including her mum and boyfriend, Olie, looking after her and cheering her on.

“My favourite moment was the last day, having my family, friends and community there was pretty amazing.” Delaney said.

And if you thought she would be looking to rest for a while, Delaney says “I’ve recovered well and already excited for new challenges.”
