We asked readers to submit race photos you’d love to share with us, and we were blown away by the response. Motivational, touching, funny and beautiful, the submissions were as varied and awesome as the runners who wear them. Thanks to all who submitted. In no particular order, here are 31 race photos and the stories that inspired them. Which is your favourite?

1. Neil Collie. This is a photo of me reaching the finish line at my first half marathon since my stroke in January 2013. I’m even wearing my National Stroke Foundation running singlet!
2. Erica Sanchez. I laughed when I saw this picture of me at the Hollywood Half Marathon a few weeks ago. Clearly I can smile through the pain because I was dying here!
3. Arletta Tell. This is from a challenging 10K race, and my daughter who has mild autism was waiting for me. I wanted to encourage her to get into running so I made sure that I had an enthusiastic finish because she was watching.
4. Joe Spratt. Here is a photo of me competing in my first ever 10K race, the 2014 Newcastle Hill 2 Harbour. It was so much fun and I think the huge smile on my face says it all!
5. Nicole Van Gurp. Here’s me during my first 53km trail run at the Glasshouse Trail Runs event Hares & Hounds, where I placed 1st female. (Photo by Dreamsport Photography)
6. Katrina Domes. The day before I turned 30 I did my first half marathon. It was incredibly emotional, I cried for the last kilometre and probably a good 30 minutes after – I was so happy! This is me crossing the finish line.
7. Kali Tarascavage. This is from the Rutgers Unite half marathon 2014. That’s me in the pink, jumping across the finish, with a time of 2:35:16!
8. Graham Ibanez. This photo is one of my very favourite “epic” race photos that was taken of me when I was running strong.
9. Marc Smerdon. This is me at the end of the Eden Project last October, I finished 2nd, and it was the hardest marathon I have ever done but I loved it.
10. Gilcelia Torres. This is my best 5K time, and it was taken in October 2013 at the Spooky Sprint 5K and I placed 3rd in the Female category!
11. Kathy Green. This was taken during my first half marathon and I’m so enjoying it… I was having the time of my life!
12. Chanelle Hoscher. I had just conquered Memorial Drive in the 2014 Newrun in Newcastle, NSW. I am 48 years old and I have re-discovered the endorphins that running gives you. Pure joy… I love this race!
13. Teresa Pugliese. This was me after I completed my first Sussans Women’s 10K fun run in December 2013.
14. Joe Ryan. I’m crossing the line at the City to Surf 2011 in 1:40. On 1 January, 2011, I was a guy who weighed 158kg and got out of breath climbing 10 stairs. This year I am going to run the Sydney Marathon.
15. Ken Thomas. Here, I’m trying very hard to keep myself dry at the Destin50 Beach Ultra in February 2014. I had a blast!
16. My mum, Carole Womack, has become more and more dedicated over the past three years. She challenges herself daily and never says “I can’t”. She is such an inspiration to me and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Here she is running for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. – Jennifer
17. Richard Pogue. This is me at the 2013 Philadelphia Marathon finish line. After battling hamstring strains, back spasm and a pinched nerve in my final two months of training, I PBed by 20 minutes (4:20:33). I was so overjoyed when I saw the finish line, I just had to leap for it.
18. Michelle Van Kesteren. This is a photo of me, taken during the Beechworth Fun Run that I competed in on 19 April.
19. Erez Algazi. My very first marathon, which I happily completed with a time of 3:19:13!
20. Kevin Buitendag. This was taken when Sieggie (on the right) and I (on the left) ran our first marathon together. It was one of the most scenic runs in the world – the Kaapsehoop Marathon, South Africa. This picture is our favourite: great leg extensions and feet not touching the floor… totally in unison.
21. Melanie Jones. These two pictures are of me after I finished the Honolulu Marathon in 2013, and then finishing the Hapalua Half Marathon in 2014.
22. Del du Kamp. This was taken at the Asics Bridges Run, 6 April 2014. I am training for my first marathon, but this run was the first “event run” of the year and a personal best for me. I felt so good that I actually noticed the photographers!
23. Sandino Lelis. This is a photo of me in Mexico when I was about to cross the finish line of my first marathon, the Tangamanga Marathon on 24 June, 2013.
24. Sanna Haikonen. Here’s of picture of me in 2012 after I finished the Helsinki City Marathon, my first marathon.
25. Dustin Duncan. Here’s me toward the end of the Canyonlands Half Marathon on 15 March, 2014. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, with PB to boot!
26. Nicole Decker. This photo of me was taken right after I crossed the finish line of my first marathon. One word: Exhilarated!
27. Adi Neeman. This is me at the Vienna City Marathon on 13 April, 2014. As a Jew whose grandfather was born in Vienna but had to leave to Israel before World War II, it was quite emotional to run in Vienna. I ran the last few metres holding the Israeli flag in my hand and ran a personal best of 02:50:11.
28. Michelle Brown. I’m finishing my second half-marathon. It was the first fun run that my family have watched me finish. I’m giving my kids a high five!
29. Judy Williams. Here I am after my second marathon, the Air Force Marathon, on 21 September, 2013, in Ohio, US. I had lost 22kg twice before, but this time I kept it off because my walks became jogs, my jogs became runs, my 5Ks became 10Ks, and 10K became a marathon. Never quit!
30. Daniel Exelrod. The 2014 Vienna City Marathon was my first. After 38 kilometres I met the “wall” everyone talks about. I found the strength to continue almost to the finish line, but five metres before the finish line, my leg muscles “melted” and I fell to the floor. The medics wanted to put me on a stretcher, but I convinced them to help me cross the finish line on my legs. It was an amazing feeling.
31. David Gravois. Coming down the home stretch of a brutal Warrior Dash, I dug deep to finish strong. Here I am (left) post-event.
