Spotify Announces New Feature for Runners

On Wednesday, Spotify, the streaming music service and app for smartphones, announced a new feature geared toward runners. Using the hardware in smartphones – like the accelerometer and GPS capability –to determine pace, Spotify Running can create customised soundtracks to match a runner’s tempo.

“Music is the perfect running companion but sometimes you need even more motivation to push on,” Candice Katz wrote in a Spotify blog. “ That’s why Spotify Running is all about helping you go the extra mile.”

Here’s how it works: Start running, and Spotify detects your tempo. Then, based on your listening history and preferences, it matches the music’s beat in time to your steps. Spotify also had some DJs and composers compose original running beats to accompany runners.

This winter, Spotify will integrate with the Nike+ app and the RunKeeper app.
